Once Upon an Easter chapter

Then with a running start we raised Baby Gal, straight up with her, “pulling the loop” Kite Man made on her Baby Gal. Now there were only two kites left in the air and we battled a bad man kite named Pitt Street Bull. Twice our tail with razor blades crossed over his rope but he still was flying and dipping and crossing and coming for our kite.

Pitt Street Bull’s tail crossed our rope three times. It looked like he was winning the battle. ‘So we pretended we were hurt and started to fall flapping in the wind like a bird whose wing is broken’.

Pitt Street Bull, saw that and was coming in for the kill.  The Kite Man shouted “Pull! Pull! Pull!” I pulled and  balled the rope furiously, the rope burning my hands. I already had blisters. Our kite rose and just as Pit was coming for the kill our tail cut his rope. We won the battle.

At the same moment a big thunder and lightning flashed through the sky, Kite Man shouted “Lego! Lego!  Lego the rope!”  Away flew Baby Gal, into the thunder and lightning razor blades sparking! Baby Gal was on fire!

Once Upon an Easter chapter 10

When we got to Kite Man’s room he was already dressed and waiting for us he had a broad smile on his face and his eyes sparkled with anticipation of the day. He wore a green suit with white shoes and said, “We go fly in style.

Our kite was so big we had to hitch a ride on a donkey cart and bumped our way to the Back Dam.

When we got to the back Dam there were thousands of kites already in the air, kites of every sort, shape and size; box kites, bird kites, boy and girl kites. A buzz of excitement engulfed us.

On one end of the dam a jukebox was playing loud calypso music and on the other a steel band was warming up.  Kite Man, as our instructor said “Raise the kite with the cloth tail fus, let’s see how bad?”

Once Upon an Easter chapter 8 Kite Man

The test kite now more damaged from the journey, we had no time to waste.  The next morning we started rummaging through our aunt’s yard looking for old box boards to cut and make parts for our broken kite. We found a few pieces and with a cutlass started chopping down on the wood.

Suddenly we heard someone shouting at us. “Hey there! Hey you there!”

We looked round and there was this tall skinny man pointing at us. “Stop that racket, what do you all think you are doing?”

We replied, “We’re trying to repair our kite”.

“Oh! I see” he said, “Come here, let me help you I have a knife the sharpest gal I ever had, when she cut, she does cut real clean and smooth”. Me use am to chop up nuff of them”. “Bring them boards, leh me help you all build a big man kite”.

I am the Kite Man. Wait here, Ah gon bring out my favorite knife Baby Gal!

His fingers were long, and his hands were steady as he chopped and planed the boards to be used for our kite.

Chapter 6 The British Soldiers

With our spirits uplifted Clarence, our Aunt Yvonne and I began preparing for the big Easter Monday kite flying day.  Only to receive a letter from my mother Gertis stating that she wanted us to spend Easter with her in New Amsterdam.

The next couple days were now spent preparing for the long journey to New Amsterdam. We boarded the train in Georgetown, Lamaha Street in Cummingsburg to begin the trip.

To our amazement and joy as boys we were in the same compartment with two British soldiers.

Guyana, then “British Guiana” was a sovereign colony of England.  The British army sent soldiers to help squash the unrest and riots and return the country to a state of peace.

Between strained snips of conversation we got to know the English soldiers. They proved to be saviors to us after the train made one of its major stops at Mahaica. At this stop we are allowed to leave the train to stretch our feet and buy food and stuff.

What we did not know was Mahaica was also World HeadQuarters for Sand Flies and Mosquitoes. The moment the train pulled out of the Mahaica station, colonies of sand flies and mosquitoes descended on us with the most vicious insect attack on man ever. Sand flies will attack you in swarms on every exposed part of your body. They will find their way through your hair down to your skull and bite every exposed part unprotected by hair and leave your head full of bumps; they are bad. The mosquitoes there will bite and drink every drop of blood you own by the time you reach to Rossignol, you will have no blood and become pale.

So there we were facing imminent death when the two English soldiers produced the most complete defense in the form of a bottle of Citronella oil. They offered to share some with us.  We graciously accepted their offer. We rubbed that oil on our body from head to toe. We literally took off our yachting boots and rubbed the oil between our toes and of course on our heads, under our shirt and pants. It just takes one sand fly to get under your shirt and pants to have you scratching and itching.

My brother and I will always be grateful to those two English soldiers.

Chapter 5 part 2 Once Upon an Easter

Then out of nowhere a strong gust of wind blew and pop went the twine (Crochet #0) and away flew our kite.

There was no time to waste. Straight away we plunged into action running in the direction of the falling kite.  The kite fell fast and it disappeared  speedily. We now had to go from yard to yard over fences fearing bad dogs and angry shouts.

Finally we got to the yard of an old lady and  asked her if she had seen a fallen kite.  “Yes” she said, and asked us to describe the kite. We slept well that night with our kites by our bedside.

Chapter 5 part 1 Once Upon an Easter

With Easter approaching fast and not having acquired a wooden kite to fly my brother, Clarence and I were worried.  We explained our dilemma to the gardener. He convinced us that our fears were unfounded and we could build our own wooden kite.

Up to that time we could only build ‘pointer broom’ kites -using the spines of the coconut tree leaves.  These were not very efficient kites. They were prone to breaking easily and had disastrous flying records.

The gardener then proceeded to lead us through the steps of making our own wood kite with old pieces of board laying around our yard.  And assisted by my aunt Yvonne who provided us with some of her greaseproof paper and some colored Barbados Kite Paper, we built two ‘singing engine’ kites with big bulls  so that they could hum in the air.  The kites, having been completed, were put to the test flight. They flew so high they hummed so loudly it could be heard for miles, our hearts could not stop pounding with happiness.  Then out of nowhere a strong gust of wind blew and pop went the twine (Crochet #0) and away flew the kites

Chapter 2 part 2

Most families were not up that early.  However because Ramadas’ father worked on the sugar estate he had to be up early. We headed to Ramdas’ bottom house.  His mother had brisk fireside going the air was filled with the aroma of hot cocoa and coffee brewing, and roti being clapped by Ramadas’ sister. On the next side of the fireside, his mother roasted some eggplant “Bologna Choker”. Two plates were prepared. We sat in a hammock and ate using our hands as the cool morning breeze blew.

Once upon an Easter chapter 2

It’s 5 am in the morning and Ramdas comes calling. You really had to know the guy. He woke me up by throwing tiny bean seeds at my bedroom window.  I sprung out of bed before he woke up the whole household.

It was also bird-catching season. The morning air was filled with different sounds of birds singing and chirping.  And just before sunrise you heard the cocks crowing around the neighborhood; it is a festive time for all birds.

Ramdas and I plunged ourselves into the surrounding fields with high grass.  He already had a bird in a cage, attached to that cage was a mini cage with a trap door.  Ramdas also had some poles stuck with chewing gum remains.

We waited as Ramadas’ bird in the cage whistled away. We were hoping his singing would attract other birds like a Kiskadee or a Towa-towa.  We  hoped to trap one or two in the little cage or on the gummy poles.

Once Upon an Easter chapter 1part 2

By the time we got home from cricket, Choe Chan’s mother had prepared for us some Chinese cakes with some cold sorrel drink.  We ate then left and went to the back of my home to start making our own cricket bats.  Sometimes, we made them out of old coconut branches that had fallen from the trees and at other times out old pieces of wood we found around our yard. The start of the Easter holidays.

Once upon an Easter

 CHAPTER 1: EASTER VACATION

School is on early Easter vacation.

The Campbellville Heroes as we fondly call ourselves were racing home on our bikes.  My bike “Yellow Bird” was an old model ladies bike fondly called a “preggie”  with a make- shift wooden bar.  On this wooden bar I towed my good friend Choe Chan.

Riding home, we came to  a screeching halt by the shaveice man for a snow cone with colorful sweet syrup.  This would cool us down from the hot sticky sun. We hoped to meet Ramdas and Suzie at the D. Y. C. playground.

Finally we got to the playground but the Subryanville Iguanas had got there before us and had all intentions of “hawking” the field.

With nothing else to do but wait, we settled under the huge guinep tree with its large branches and cool tropical breeze blowing. Ramdas however saved the day.Would you believe that he had a flour bag full of mangoes? We ate as much as we could.  Now it was barging time. We dealt the rest to the Iguanas to get them off the cricket pitch.

Day in the life of Abby, chapter 5 part 3 Nostalgia

She was indeed the most beautiful girl eyes have ever did see. In due time after they got to know each other better and drew closer they became lovers at a very tender age. Clarence got to know that she had a very special body, with its own particular scent. This scent drove him mad with constant desire to become one with her. There was stillness when they touched all one heard was hearts beating; to this rhythm, they made love. They would lie in bed for hours and even when not touching a cross invasion of their minds caused tingling excitement that left them breathless. Romance put into an art form he listening to her body’s vibration waiting for her to reach her peak and her taking him higher till they reached together a higher plain then ultimately, the pair exploded in organism screaming loud into the surrounding air. Yet they were still young and as the sun went down and the evening grew cool they would join the other kids to sing and play ring games. Then as the crowd disperse they would go hand in hand into the moon light love so young so full of vigor.

Day in the life of Abby

Thorn came home to the shocking news his wife Stella had died. It will seem she died in her sleep. After a ritual was preformed by the local Witch Doctor. Her death was investigated and the Witch Doctor was arrested and a trial followed. A frustrating trial for justice Clarence.

Excerpts chapter 5 Nostalgia.

He had been transferred to this new school. Not wanting to be noticed he took a seat at the back of the class and buried his head in a book pretending to be reading. However, as he tried very hard to concentrate on his reading a captivating voice kept Slicing through his faked absorption eventually, he could keep his pretense no longer he peaked over the top of his book.

What he saw behind that voice held him spell bound. There stood the most beautiful girl his eyes had ever seen. Her eyes sparkled like ripe mangos with the reflection of the sun as dewdrops lingered on them. She had cheeks as red as a cherry. As his eyes roved the length of her body. He noticed she wore the shortest skirt his eyes ever did see. What followed almost had him falling off his chair she had the most beautiful brown slender legs that ever existed. There seem to be surrounding them was an invisible force that drew them together

Day in the life of Abby chapter 1 part 2

It suddenly struck him as strange that there was no Stella to greet him. Where was his wife where were his usual hug and embrace and long lasting kiss. What’s happening? Thorn was anticipating their lovemaking. He would after kissing her rush to the shower to rid himself of all the dust and grime on his body from work in the forest and his long journey home. The first blast of the shower would always be cold and have him shiver then the water would warm up from the heat it acquired from the sun. Just at this moment, Stella would step in the shower with him and start to scrub him down with soap this he loved as it helped to relax his tiered muscles. He would then turn the sponge on her and start to soap her down gently as he did this she would get closer to him and start to rub her

DAY IN THE LIFE OF ABBY

CHAPTER ONE

THORN“Massa! Massa! Here! Here! I keep the best part of she for you.”

The wide smiling face with large gleaming white teeth and a flat flaring nose of his steward boy with a basin in his hand that contained a dark object with a foul smell was the sight and smell that greeted Thorn when he returned home.It had had been three months since Thorn had been home. Thorn, who was a young engineer, arrived home zooming down his long driveway. He drove his open top Land Rover Jeep at a treacherously fast speed. Blaring the vehicle’s horn, as he got nearer home so his wife could anticipate his homecoming. Anxious to be greeted by his wife he brought his Land Rover to a screeching halt at the bottom of the wide wooden stairs of his home. He then jumped out of his jeep and sort of bounced up the stairs, two treads at a time banged open the front shutters door shouting, “Stella! Stella! Stella! I am home, I am home!” going from room to room.
